Charles I 1887-1922
Emperor of Austria as Karl I and King of Hungary as Károly IV, the last of the Habsburg emperors

Born at Persenbeug Castle, the son of Archduke Otto and grand-nephew of Emperor Franz Joseph, he became heir presumptive (1914) on the assassination at Sarajevo of his uncle, Archduke Franz Ferdinand. On his great-uncle's death (1916) he proclaimed himself Emperor of Austria and King of Hungary. He made secret attempts (which failed) to withdraw Austria/Hungary from World War I. In 1918 he was deposed, and exiled to Switzerland (1919). In 1921 he made two unsuccessful attempts to regain the Crown of Hungary, and was deported to Madeira, where he died. In 1911 he had married Zita of Bourbon-Parma; their son Archduke Otto later renounced his right of succession.
