Charles I, called the Bald, also Charles II 823-77
King of France and Holy Roman Emperor

The son of Louis the Pious and grandson of Charlemagne, he was king from 843 and emperor (as Charles II) of the West from 875. His reign was characterized by rivalries within the royal family, and aristocratic factionalism, but also saw the zenith of the Carolingian renaissance, mainly due to his patronage of art and letters.
