Charles of Anjou 1226-85
Angevin King of Naples and Sicily

The posthumous son of Louis VIII of France, he was crowned King of Naples and Sicily by Pope Urban IV (1265), and defeated his Hohenstaufen rivals Manfred, King of Sicily in 1266 and Conradin of Swabia (1252-68) in 1268. He conquered much of mainland Greece, but his rule was unpopular, partly because he used French officials. He aimed to re-establish the Latin Empire in Constantinople (Istanbul), but when Peter III of Aragon seized Sicily after the revolt known as the Sicilian Vespers (1282), his plans failed and he was expelled.
