Kristian VIII 1786-1848
King of Denmark

Born in Copenhagen, the son and successor of Frederik VI, he was elected King of Norway (1814), but was ousted by Karl XIV Johan (Bernadotte) of Sweden. As King of Denmark (from 1839) he allowed freedom of trade with Iceland and revived the ancient Althing (parliament) of Iceland as an Icelandic consultative assembly (1843). He signed an order early in 1848 abolishing monarchical absolutism, which was implemented by his son and successor, Frederik VII, the following year.
