Kristian X 1870-1947
King of Denmark, and of Iceland

Born in Charlottenlund, the son of Frederik VIII, he was revered as a symbol of resistance during the German occupation in World War II. He signed a new constitution granting the vote to women (1915), and in 1918 signed the Act of Union with Iceland which granted Iceland full independence in personal union with the Danish sovereign (this ended in 1944). During World War II he elected to stay on in Denmark, riding on horseback through Copenhagen, and he was put under house arrest by the Germans (1943-45). He married Alexandrine, Duchess of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, and was succeeded by their son, Frederik IX.
