Chrysostom, St John c.347-407AD
Syrian churchman, and one of the Doctors of the Church

Born in Antioch, he was named from the Greek meaning 'golden-mouthed', due to his eloquence. He spent six years as a monk in the mountains, but illness forced his return in AD381 to Antioch, where he was ordained, and gained his reputation as a great religious orator. In 398 he was made Archbishop of Constantinople, where he carried out many reforms, but his reproof of vices caused the Empress Eudocia (wife of Arcadius) to have him deposed and banished (404), after which he moved from one place of exile to another. His works are Homilies, Commentaries on the whole Bible, part of which have perished, Epistles, Treatises on Providence, the Priesthood, etc, and Liturgies. His feast day is 27 January.
