Clarke, Samuel 1675-1729
English philosopher and theologian

Born in Norwich, Norfolk, he studied at Cambridge, where he became a friend and disciple of Sir Isaac Newton. He was chaplain to the Bishop of Norwich from 1698, to Queen Anne from 1706, and became rector of St James' Westminster in 1709. His Boyle Lectures of 1704-05 contained his 'Demonstration of the Being and Attributes of God' and expounded the famous 'mathematical' proof of God's existence. His extensive correspondence with Gottfried Leibniz (published in 1717) defended a Newtonian view of space, time and the universe.
