Conrad III 1093-1152
King of Germany

He was the first Hohenstaufen Holy Roman Emperor. His support of Henry V earned him the duchy of Franconia in 1115. On the death of Emperor Lothar III, the princes of Germany, fearing the growing power of the Guelf party, crowned Conrad at Aachen (1138). He quarreled with the Guelf Henry the Proud, and then with Henry's son, Henry the Lion. When St Bernard of Clairvaux preached a new crusade, Conrad set out for Palestine with a large army (1147). He designated his nephew, Frederick I Barbarossa, as his successor.
