The father of Constantine I, the Great, he took the title Caesar (AD292), and had Britain, Gaul and Spain as his government. After re-establishing Roman power in Britain and defeating the Alemanni, so strengthening the Rhine frontier, he took the title of Augustus (305). He died in York.
