Cope, Sir John d.1760
English soldier

He was commissioned in the cavalry in 1707 and in the War of the Austrian Succession (1740-48), and in 1742 commanded the troops sent to assist the Empress Maria Theresa in 1742. On the landing of Prince Charles Edward Stuart in 1745, he was appointed Commander-in-Chief of the forces in Scotland. After a fruitless march to the Highlands, he returned by sea to Dunbar, and was routed at the Battle of Prestonpans (1745). He was ridiculed in the song 'Hey, Johnny Cope'.
