Crane, (Harold) Hart 1899-1932
US poet
Born in Garrettsville, Ohio, he had little formal education, but worked as an advertising copywriter in New York before he found a patron who enabled him to travel and devote himself to poetry. An alcoholic and homosexual, he placed a heavy burden on his friends' tolerance and wallets. He published two volumes - White Buildings (1926) and the long, symbolic The Bridge (1930) - variously hailed as masterpieces and unintelligible. Crane is now recognized as a major US poet, having much in common with Walt Whitman. Returning to the USA from Mexico, he drowned himself by leaping from a steamboat into the Caribbean.
