Dargomizhsky, Aleksandr Sergeyevich 1813-69
Russian composer

Born in Tula, he was taught by Mikhail Glinka and influenced by other Russian nationalist composers. He set Alexander Pushkin's Kamenny Gost ('The Stone Guest') to music (1866, completed by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov and performed in St Petersburg in 1872), which anticipated the work of Mussorgsky in dramatic power and naturalist treatment of words. He also wrote the operas Esmeralda (completed 1840) and Rusalka (1856), and almost 100 songs.
