French scholar and poet

As president of the Collčge de Coqueret he supervised the studies of Pierre de Ronsard, Joachim du Bellay, Jean de Baďf and Rémy Belleau. These poets, with whom he was united in the famous Pléiade, he carefully trained for the task of reforming the vernacular and ennobling French literature by imitation of Greek and Latin models. He wrote copious verse in Greek and Latin, and was appointed court poet by Charles IX.
