He became Chief Adviser to Edward II after the death of Piers de Gaveston (c.1284-1312), but was banished with his son, Hugh (1321). Recalled the next year by Edward II he was created Earl of Winchester. After Queen Isabella of France's landing in England (1326) he was captured by the queen's party and hanged at Bristol; his son was hanged at Hereford.
