Dewey, Thomas Edmund 1902-71
US politician

He was born in Owosso, Michigan. After studying law at the universities of Michigan and Columbia, he became district attorney for New York County (1937) and Governor of New York State (elected 1942, 1946, 1950). He was Republican nominee for President in 1944 and 1948, when by virtue of the 'Dewey machine', his campaign organization, he appeared to be a much stronger candidate than President Harry S Truman.
