Dionysius the Younger fl.367-343BC
Tyrant of Syracuse
The son of Dionysius the Elder, he succeeded him in 367BC. Reportedly indolent and dissolute, he fell out with Dion who had invited Plato to Syracuse. Dion was banished, but 10 years afterwards expelled Dionysius. He fled to Locri, and made himself master of the city, which he ruled despotically, until dissensions in Syracuse (346) enabled him to return there. However in 343 Timoleon went to free Sicily, and Dionysius was exiled to Corinth.
