Donatus, Aelius fl.4th century AD
Roman grammarian

He taught grammar and rhetoric in Rome in about 360AD, amongst others to St Jerome. His treatises form a course of Latin grammar (Ars grammatica), and in the Middle Ages were the only textbooks used in schools, so that 'Donat' in western Europe came to mean a grammar book. He also wrote commentaries on Terence and Virgil.
