Duccio di Buoninsegna c.1260-c.1320
Italian painter

He founded the Sienese school, and in his work the Byzantine tradition in Italian art is seen in its most highly developed state. His masterpiece is the Maestŕ for the altar of Siena Cathedral (1311), and the Rucellai Madonna in S Maria Novella at Florence, long attributed to Giovanni Cimabué, is now generally considered to be his work. He is represented in the National Gallery, London, by the Annunciation, Christ Healing the Blind Man and the Transfiguration.
