Edward, called Edward the Elder c.870-c.924
King of Wessex

The son of Alfred the Great, he succeeded his father in 899. Tenacious and imaginative, he was the best Anglo-Saxon royal strategist. He brought back under English rule the whole of the Danelaw south of the Humber, building a series of fortresses to consolidate his rule. He took control of Mercia (918) after the death of his sister Ethelflćd (the 'Lady of the Mercians'), and subdued the Scots, the Norsemen in Northumbria, and the Welsh Britons of Strathclyde.
