Ehrenberg, Christian Gottfried 1795-1876
German naturalist

Born in Delitzsch in Prussian Saxony, he became professor at Berlin University from 1839, and travelled in Egypt, Syria, Arabia and Central Asia. His works on microscopic organisms founded a new branch of science, and he discovered that phosphorescence in the sea is caused by living organisms.
