Eliot, Sir John 1592-1632
English statesman

Born in Port Eliot, near St Germans in Cornwall, he entered parliament in 1614, was knighted in 1618 and in 1619 was appointed vice-admiral of Devon. Previously a follower of the 1st Duke of Buckingham, he broke with him in 1625 and was instrumental in securing his impeachment. In 1628 he denounced arbitrary taxation and helped to force the Petition of Right from Charles I. After further protests against the king he was sent to the Tower of London, where he was kept in confinement until his death.
