Fairbanks, Douglas Elton Ulman, Jnr 1909-2000
US film actor
He was born in New York City, the son of Douglas Fairbanks, Senior. In his youth he made Hollywood movies in his father's style, including Catherine the Great (1934), The Prisoner of Zenda (1937) and Sinbad the Sailor (1947), and also gained a reputation as a producer. He later became interested in international affairs, and made a name for himself as a diplomat. He distinguished himself in World War II and was created an honorary KBE in 1949. He published two volumes of autobiography, The Salad Days (1988) and A Hell of a War (1993).
