Ferdinand III c.1200-52
King of Castile and of Leon

The son of Alfonso IX of Leon, he attacked from 1224 the weakened Almohad caliphate in Andalusia. After capturing Córdoba (1236), he went on to take Jaen (1246), Seville (1248), Cadiz (1249) and the surrounding territories, settling his conquests with Christian inhabitants. By his death he had annexed more Muslim territory than any other Spanish king, and reduced the remaining Muslim states, now confined to Granada, to vassal kingdoms of Castile. He was canonized in 1671, and his feast day is 30 May.
