Ferdinand III 1608-57
King of Hungary and of Bohemia, and Holy Roman Emperor
The son of Emperor Ferdinand II, he was born in Graz, Austria. Although scholarly, shy and artistic, he ruled with vigour and skill as ruler of Hungary from 1626, of Bohemia from 1627, and Holy Roman Emperor from 1637. He conspired in the overthrow of Albrecht von Wallenstein and succeeded him as commander of the Imperial armies. As emperor he continued the struggle against the Protestants but opened negotiations at Münster (1644), and signed the Peace of Westphalia (1648) which ended the Thirty Years War.

Search Tip
