Ferrar, Nicholas 1592-1637
English theologian and mystic

He was born in London. An Anglican deacon, he founded a Utopian religious community (1625) at Little Gidding in Huntingdonshire (Cambridgeshire). The 30 adherents held constant services and occupied themselves with fine bookbinding. They printed and published the first edition of George Herbert's The Temple (1633). The community was not broken up by the Puritans until 1647.
