Franz Ferdinand 1863-1914
Archduke of Austria

Born in Graz, he was the nephew and heir apparent (from 1896) of Emperor Franz Joseph. On a visit to Sarajevo (now in Bosnia) in 1914 he and his wife Sophie were assassinated by a group of young Serbian nationalists led by Gavrilo Princip. Austria used the incident as a pretext for attacking Serbia, which precipitated World War I.
