Frederik IX 1899-1972
King of Denmark
Born at Sorgenfri Castle, near Copenhagen, he was the son and successor (1947) of Kristian X. A naval officer (rising to rear admiral in 1946), he was crown prince of Denmark from 1912. In 1935 he married Ingrid, daughter of King Gustav VI of Sweden. During World War II he assisted his father in resistance to the German occupation, and was held under house arrest (1943-45). He was crowned in 1947 and was a popular monarch. He granted home rule to the Faroe Islands (1948), and in 1953 a new constitution provided for female succession to the throne. His eldest daughter became Crown Princess and succeeded him as Queen Margrethe II (1972). His youngest daughter, Anne-Marie, married ex-King Constantine II of Greece (1964).

Search Tip
