Froissart, Jean c.1333-c.1404
French chronicler and poet
Born in Valenciennes, Hainault, he was educated for the Church, but at the age of 19 began to write the history of the wars of his time. He served Philippa of Hainault, wife of Edward III of England (1361-69), and travelled in Scotland, France and Italy. Returning to Hainault, he resumed work on his Chroniques (Eng trans Chronicles, 1523-25), which cover European history from 1325 to 1400. Mainly occupied with France, England, Scotland and Flanders during the Hundred Years War (1337-1453), he also supplies valuable information about Germany, Italy and Spain. He wrote poems for noble patrons and became private chaplain to Guy of Châtillon.

The second is an asterisk *, which matches zero or more characters. The two kinds of wildcard can be mixed in a single search.
