Gaiseric or Genseric c.390-477AD
King of the Vandals and Alans

The son of the Vandal leader Godigisel, he succeeded his half-brother Gunderic in AD427. Invited by Bonifacius, the Roman governor of Africa, Gaiseric entered Numidia (429), captured and sacked Hippo (430), and seized Carthage (439). He established a formidable maritime power, ranging as far as the Peloponnese. An Arian, he ferociously persecuted Catholics. Eudoxia, the widow of Valentinian III, invited Gaiseric to Rome to destroy her husband's murderer Maximus. Gaiseric's fleet took and sacked the city (455), and one of Eudoxia's daughters married his son and successor, Huneric. Fleets sent against the Vandals (457, 468) were defeated.
