García, Manuel 1775-1832
Spanish tenor and composer

Born in Seville, he made his reputation as a tenor in Cadiz and Madrid, and from 1808 travelled to Paris, Italy and London. In 1825 he visited New York and Mexico, where he was robbed of all his money, which compelled him to teach singing on his return to Paris. Several of his compositions, such as Il Califo di Bagdad ('The Thief of Baghdad'), became popular. His daughter was Pauline Viardot-García.
