Viardot-García, (Michelle Ferdinande) Pauline, née Paulina García 1821-1910
Spanish mezzo-soprano

Born in Paris, the daughter of Manuel García, she was tutored in piano by Franz Liszt, in compostion by Rejcha, and in singing by her mother, and made her London debut in 1839. She married Louis Viardot in 1840; their children included both the contralto Louise Viardot (1841-1918) and the violinist and composer Paul Viardot (1857-1941). Paulina, a composer of operettas and songs as well as a singer, had a long and highly influential career. Her sister was Marie Malibran.
