Gardner, Ava, originally Lucy Johnson 1922-90
US film actress

Born in North Carolina, she was signed by MGM as a teenager, emerging from the ranks of decorative starlets with her portrayal of a femme fatale in The Killers (1946). A green-eyed brunette, once voted the world's most beautiful woman, she remained a leading lady for two decades, portraying an earthy combination of sensuality and cynicism in films like Mogambo (1953), The Barefoot Contessa (1954) and Night of the Iguana (1964). She continued to work as a character actress in films and on television. She was married to Mickey Rooney, Artie Shaw and Frank Sinatra. She published an autobiography, Ava, in 1990.
