Geibel, Emmanuel von 1815-84
German poet

Born in Lübeck, he studied at Bonn, and was tutor (1838-39) in Athens to the family of the Russian ambassador. He made many translations from Greek, Spanish and Italian authors, and with Paul von Heyse founded the Munich school of poetry, which emphasized harmony and form. He also wrote plays in classical form.
