Born near Augustodunum, Gaul (now Autun, France), he was made Bishop of Auxerre. He was invited to Britain to combat Pelagianism in AD429, and under him the Christian Britons won the bloodless 'Alleluia Victory' over the Picts and Saxons at Maes Garmon ('Germanus's field') in Flintshire. His feast day is 31 July.
