Gilbert, Sir Humphrey 1537-83
English navigator

Born in Buxham, he served under Sir Henry Sidney in Ireland (1566-70), was made Governor of Munster, then campaigned in the Netherlands (1570-75). In 1578 he led an unsuccessful colonizing expedition to the New World. In a second attempt in 1583 he landed in Newfoundland, claiming it for the Crown, and established a colony at St John's. He was drowned on the homeward journey. He was the half-brother of Sir Walter Raleigh.
