He was born in Christchurch, Hampshire, the son of Richard de Clare, 7th Earl of Gloucester. He sided with Simon de Montfort and helped him win the Battle of Lewes (1264) against the king's forces, but after quarrelling with de Montfort, he joined Prince Edward (later Edward I), and won the Battle of Evesham (1265). He married Joan, daughter of Edward I, and built Caerphilly Castle in south Wales.
