Described (in 1 Samuel 17) as a giant from Gath in the Philistine army, he entered into single combat with the young David and was slain by a stone from David's sling, resulting in Israel's victory. Some confusion exists over a similar name in 2 Samuel 21.19 (also 1 Chronicles 20.5).
