Goossens, Sir Eugčne 1893-1962
English composer and conductor

Born in London, the son of the Belgian violinist and conductor Eugčne Goossens, he studied in Bruges and London, and became associate conductor to Sir Thomas Beecham (1916-20) in his opera seasons. In 1921 he gave a successful series of orchestral concerts, in which he brought out some of his own music. From 1923 to 1945 he worked in the USA, as conductor of the Rochester (New York) Philharmonic Orchestra and of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. Conductor of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and director of the New South Wales Conservatorium from 1947 to 1956, he became a major influence on Australian music. His own music includes the operas Judith (1929) and Don Juan de Mańara (1937), a large-scale oratorio The Apocalypse (1950-54), and two symphonies.
