Gorbachev, Raisa Maksimovna, née Titorenko 1932-99
Soviet educationist

Born in the Altai region, she graduated from Moscow University and pursued a career in sociological research and lecturing. She worked as a sociologist at Stavropol Teacher Training Institute (1957-61) and was a lecturer at Moscow University (1977-85). She had gained standing in her own right before 1985 when, as the wife of Mikhail Gorbachev, the then General Secretary of the Communist Party of the USSR, she accompanied him on special occasions and overseas tours. At the end of his presidency she continued as a member of the board of the Cultural Heritage Commission.
