Gregory XVI, originally Bartolomeo Alberto Mauro Cappellari 1765-1846
Austrian pope

Born in Belluno, Venetia, he went to the monastery of San Michele de Murano, near Venice, and became a member of the Camaldolese order. He was pope from 1831 and represented reaction and Ultramontanism in a revolutionary period. He favoured the Jesuits, and increased the papal debt by spending on buildings and museums.
