Haakon I Haraldsson, the Good c.914-961
King of Norway
The youngest son of Harald I Halfdanarson, he was brought up in England at the Christian court of King Athelstan. Co-ruler of Norway from c.940, he returned to Norway on his father's death (c.945) and seized the Crown with his half-brother, Erik Haraldsson, Blood-Axe. Haakon proved to be an able legislator and administrator. He brought missionaries from England and built some churches, but his attempts to convert Norway to Christianity met stubborn resistance. He had to fight off several attempts on the throne by the sons of Erik Blood-Axe, led by Harald II Eriksson, Grey-Cloak, and eventually died in battle against them.
