Hamilton, James, 2nd Earl of Arran and Duke of Châtelherault c.1515-1575
Scottish nobleman and Regent of Scotland

The grandson of James, 1st Baron Hamilton (d.1479) by the niece of Cardinal Beaton, he was a young man when the death of James V (1542) left only an infant, the future Mary, Queen of Scots, between him and the throne. He was chosen regent and tutor to the young queen, and held these offices until 1554, when Mary of Guise became regent. His regency was characterized by indecision and attention to family interest. He was granted the duchy of Châtelherault (1548) by Henri II of France.
