Haussmann, Georges Eugčne, Baron 1809-91
French financier and town-planner
Born in Paris, he entered the public service, and under Napoleon III became prefect of the Seine (1853). He then began his task of improving Paris by widening streets, laying out boulevards and parks, building bridges, etc. For these services he was made baron and senator, but the heavy tax burden laid upon the citizens led to his dismissal in 1870. In 1871 he was appointed director of the Crédit mobilier, and in 1881 was elected to the Chamber of Deputies.

A wildcard is a special character you can use to replace one or more characters in a word. There are two types of wildcard. The first is a question mark ?, which matches a single character. The second is an asterisk *, which matches zero or more characters. The two kinds of wildcard can be mixed in a single search.
