Hawke (of Towton), Edward Hawke, 1st Baron 1705-81
English admiral

Born in London, he joined the navy in 1720. As a young commander he fought against the French and Spanish. In the Seven Years War (1756-63) he destroyed the French fleet in Quiberon Bay in November 1759, thus preventing an invasion of Great Britain. He became an MP (1747), First Lord of the Admiralty (1766-71), Admiral of the Fleet (1768) and a baron (1776).
