King of Germany

The founder of the Saxon dynasty, he was Duke of Saxony from 912. As Henry I (from 919), he brought Swabia and Bavaria into the German confederation, regained Lotharingia (925), defeated the Wends (928) and the Hungarians in 933, and seized Schleswig from Denmark (934). He was about to claim the imperial Crown (936) when he died. He was succeeded by his son, Otto I, the Great. Another son was St Bruno.
