Heyse, Paul Johann von 1830-1914
German writer and Nobel Prize winner
He was born in Berlin, and settled in Munich in 1854. He excelled as a short-story writer, his tales being marked by a graceful style, sly humour and frequent sensuality. They were collected in Das Buch der Freundschaft (1883-84, 'The Book of Friendship') and other volumes. He also wrote novels, plays and epic poems, and translations of Italian poets. He was awarded the 1910 Nobel Prize for literature.

Search Tip
