Hood, Alexander, 1st Viscount Bridport 1727-1814
English naval commander

The brother of Samuel, 1st Viscount Hood, he joined the navy in 1741. In 1761 he recaptured from the French the Warwick, a 60-gun ship, and during the French Revolutionary Wars he served under Richard, 1st Earl Howe in the English Channel and the Strait of Gibraltar. He took part in the defeat of the French off Ushant, at the Battle of the Glorious First of June (1794) and later became Commander-in-Chief of the Channel fleet from 1797 to 1800.
