English admiral

The son of Sir William Howard (c.1510-1573), he succeeded to his father's title in 1573 and became Lord High Admiral in 1585. A cousin of Queen Elizabeth I, he was Commander-in-Chief of the English fleet against the Spanish Armada (1588). In 1596 he led the expedition (with Robert Devereux, 2nd Earl of Essex) that sacked Cadiz. He was a commissioner at the trial of Mary, Queen of Scots (1586), and in 1601 quelled Essex's rebellion.
