Howard, Thomas, 2nd Duke of Norfolk and 1st Earl of Surrey 1443-1524
English nobleman, soldier and politician

Born in Stoke-by-Nayland, Suffolk, the son of John Howard, 1st Duke of Norfolk, he fought for Richard III and was wounded and captured at Bosworth (1485), but after three years' imprisonment in the Tower of London, he was released and restored to his estates. Modest and humane, he was mainly a soldier. He put down a serious revolt in Yorkshire (1489) and, as Lieutenant-General of the North for Henry VIII, he decisively defeated the Scots at Flodden (1513) and was created Duke of Norfolk (1514). He distrusted the policies of Cardinal Wolsey and presided over the trial of Edward Stafford, Duke of Buckingham (1521).
