Humperdinck, Engelbert 1854-1921
German composer

Born in Siegburg, near Bonn, he studied music at Cologne, Frankfurt am Main, Munich and Berlin, and travelled in France, Spain and Italy. He taught at Barcelona, Cologne, Frankfurt and Berlin, and became famous as the composer of the musical fairy play, Hänsel und Gretel (1893), which was highly successful. Schnee-wittchen ('Snow White'), Königskinder (1897, 'The King's Children'), The Miracle (1912) and others followed.
